The Maldives

The Maldives, It is one of the world’s most coveted destinations and recognised in one word, ‘paradise’. Composed of 26 ring-shaped atolls which are made up of 1190 islands, the Maldives is spread over 90, 000 square kilometres and is the world’s lowest lying nation with only 8 feet above sea level being the highest point. Imagine flying above these islands! Breathtaking is an understatement.

#didyouknow the word ‘atoll’ is a borrowing from the Maldivian language, ‘Dhivehi’? It is the Maldives’ first language written in a script called ‘Thaana’ from right to left and is a direct result of its unique mix of the Arabic, English, Hindi, Sinhalese and Urdu culture, influenced by being located on the crossroads of the Indian Ocean trade route. Over generations, the Maldives assimilated these influences giving it, its unique cultural identity.

#didyoualsoknow the Maldives is the only country in the world that can claim the fame to be a, ‘one island one resort’ destination? Due to its geographical uniqueness, privacy gets a whole different meaning in the Maldives (perfect for honeymooners!) and this also means, that no two resorts are alike.

Over the years, the Maldives has become accessible to some of the world’s largest carriers flying in regularly from major cities and it has its fair share of private jets, luxury yachts and cruise liners. For proximity, the Maldives is a 45-minute flight from Sri Lanka, 4 hours from Singapore, 4 hours from Dubai and 13 hours from London.

There is no prior visa required for the Maldives as a free 30-day Visa on arrival is usually granted. However, for other enquiries, find out more here: Maldives Department of Immigration and Emigration

As you land at Velana International Airport, there are several modes of transport available to get you to your destination. Home to the largest seaplane fleet in the world, it is the quickest way to arrive at resorts or domestic flights are available for resorts located further away. Alternatively, for resorts that are closer to the airport, hop on board a speedboat or a luxury yacht for 30 minutes to an hour of the wind-in-your-hair moment. Your holiday begins almost immediately.

The Maldives is not only famed for its elite resorts. Underwater is where the real magic happens. With visibility proven to be one of the clearest in the world and with the abundant marine life underwater, it is almost avatar-like. Colourful tropical fishes swim past you (or with you!) Spot turtles, whale sharks and even dolphins. Be awestruck by corals gleaming in the afternoon sun or glowing in the dark under the full moonlight. Diving and snorkelling here is the -#1 sport (apart from doing nothing).

‘What’s the weather like in the Maldives?’ Whilst the tropical climate of the Maldives is fairly consistent, the occasional rains do make an appearance. For a more accurate account, please click here.
